Road kill: Some animals are thrown to the roadside, others are run over again and again by cars traveling too fast to stop. Thousands of Australia's native animals are killed annually on the expanding network of roads crossing the outback. Housing developments and deforestation have already reduced natural habitats, and roads add a further hazard for local fauna.
