Russian soldiers sunbathe on a rooftop while a sniper stands guard. Street fighting during the final stages of the capture of the city from Chechen rebels had taken its toll, but by the spring Russian troops had established themselves. Although the Chechen capital was razed and most citizens had fled, the rebels consolidated in the surrounding hills and still posed a threat.
