A detainee in an outdoor solitary confinement cell talks with a military policeman at the Abu Ghraib Prison, west of Baghdad. The prisoner was confined for fighting with other inmates. Under Saddam Hussein's presidency, Abu Ghraib had been the scene of the execution and torture of thousands of political prisoners. Its notoriety reemerged in 2004 with reports of US guards' violence against prisoners, and the release of photographs taken by soldiers depicting physical and sexual abuse of inmates.
