A researcher takes a sample of the sarcophagus which may enable her to establish the provenance of the tree from which it was made, and thus, hopefully, the provenance of the mummy. In 1825 an Armenian adventurer who became Egypt's Minister of Finance presented this mummy to the Monastery of San Lazzaro, an ancient center of learning. These 3,500-year-old remains of a high-ranking official or priest have become the subject of intensive study. Chemists, biologists, botanists and geologists use the latest techniques to extract information from Egyptian mummies such as this one.
