Pilgrims prostrate themselves along the eight-kilometer-long Lingkhor road as a truck laden with Chinese soldiers speeds by. In the Holy City, forbidden territory for western visitors until 1951, three ring roads encircle the inner chapels of Jokhang Temple, the temple itself and the old city center. Lingkhor is the outermost road.
