Soviet and Russian scientist and dissident Andrei Sakharov at a meeting of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, with its former president Anatoly Alexandrov. Sakharov became a member of the Academy after his return from exile to Moscow in December 1986. In 1988 he visited the United States on his first foreign trip in 30 years.
