Israeli Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat meet at the White House. The occasion was a 36-hour summit called at short notice when heavy fighting had put the Middle East peace process in jeopardy. Afterwards, a renunciation of violence was announced along with plans for negotiations to ease the Israeli presence in Hebron.
