Aurora borealis lights up the darkness of the Arctic winter. It illuminates the Antarctica, a French vessel which lay encased in ice in a Spitsbergen fjord for eight months. The storms and extreme temperatures of the polar night did not stop the scientists on board from studying marine currents and animal plankton. In June the vessel finally broke free and returned to Brittany.
