Friedman autographs the brassiere of an admirer at Lamar University. Flamboyant singer, songwriter, humorist and author Richard D. 'Kinky' Friedman ran as an independent candidate for the governorship of Texas, receiving 12 percent of the vote. Known for his irreverent wit and enjoyment at causing outrage, Friedman announced policies ranging from support for gay marriage, to sending 10,000 troops to the Mexican border to deal with illegal immigration.
