Rescue workers carry a woman out of the US embassy. Bombs exploded minutes apart outside the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. The five-story building, together with an office block next door, collapsed, killing 247 people and injuring thousands. The explosions were attributed to Islamic extremists, allegedly under the direction of Osama Bin Laden, known for his financial backing of a number of radical Muslim organizations.
