A dhow captain pulls his boat in at low tide to moor for the night. There are no cars on Lamu, and dhows are an important means of transport for both passengers and cargo. Craft like this one carry anything from fuel to fancy goods around the archipelago. Ownership or captaincy of a dhow carries high social status, but means a substantial investment - and income is hard won.
