For several days indiscriminate looting and stone throwing could be witnessed in a large area of the city. The acquittal of four police officers whose assault on black motorist Rodney King was watched on TV by millions, sparked off mass looting and rioting. The disturbances claimed 58 lives and many buildings were destroyed by fire.
