Sheltering himself from the heat of the desert, a Kuwait refugee stands back while hundreds line up in the desert for food and water. Shaalan One refugee camp, in a 43-mile-wide swath of no-man's land between Jordan and Iraq, houses some 70,000 people. Saddam Hussein's occupation of Kuwait sent thousands of refugees, including Egyptians and Bangladeshis, fleeing into the desert to escape the atrocities of Iraqi troops.
