Sunrise at Shaalan One refugee camp in a 43-mile-wide swath of no-man's land between Jordan and Iraq. Fires are made of the garbage as Kuwait refugees sleep on the desert floor. Saddam Hussein's occupation of Kuwait sent thousands of refugees, including Egyptians and Bangladeshis, fleeing into the desert to escape the atrocities of Iraqi troops.
