Lance Corporal Joshua Bernard is tended to by fellow US Marines after being fatally wounded by a rocket-propelled grenade during a Taliban ambush in the village of Dahaneh, in Helmand province, Afghanistan on 14 August. Bernard's father objected that publication of the photo dishonored his son's memory. Others countered that this was a scene rarely shown to the US public.
