Dr. Peter Heimes, far right, inventor of the Heimes portable driver, supervises the initial hoopup of the portable unit which powers the artifical heart. The device is being tested for the first time on a human, William Schroeder, who had an artificial heart implantation operation at the Humana Heart Centre.
