The funeral of Bachir Gemayel in Beirut, Lebanon. Gemayel, a Maronite Christian and senior member of the Phalange party, had been elected president of Lebanon, but was killed in a bomb attack on 14 September 1982 before he could be sworn in. The bomb had been planted in the Beirut headquarters of the Phalangist by Habib Tanious Shartouni, a member of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party. To revenge Gemayel's death, Christian Phalangists caused a massacre in the Palestinian refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila in Beirut.
