Pietro Masturzo (Naples, 1980) is a documentary photographer and a photoreporter whose work focuses on socio-political issues, with a particular interest in the resilience and the resistance of peoples in the face of oppression and the violation of human rights.
Masturzo graduated in International Relations and Diplomatic Affairs before turning his attention and studies toward documentary photography, which then would become his privileged tool to raise questions and try to understand our times.
His images have been published in Italian and international magazines and newspapers, including L’Espresso, Il Corriere della Sera, Internazionale, Le Monde, Der Spiegel, Geo, Stern and The New Yorker among others.
Masturzo’s work has been widely exhibited in group and solo exhibitions in various galleries, festivals, and museums including the Lower Belvedere in Vienna, The Nobel Peace Centre in Oslo, and the House of Photography in Hamburg.
Among the various recognitions for his work, he was awarded the World Press Photo of the Year in 2010 for an image depicting women shouting their dissent from a Tehran rooftop following Iran's disputed presidential elections.
Since 2015, Masturzo has been leading projects using photography for social purposes, in collaboration with different foundations and associations, and thanks to the support of Canon Italy.
In 2018 his first documentary movie Life is but a dream, realized with the documentary director and anthropologist Margherita Pescetti, was released and awarded the Audience Prize at the 59th Festival dei Popoli and the Best Documentary at 26th Visioni Italiane.
He is represented by the Italian photo agency Prospekt.
