Joost van den Broek was born in 1967 in the Netherlands and graduated in 1991 from the Academie voor Beeldende Vorming in Tilburg. After eight years teaching photojournalism, portrait and documentary photography, he began working as a freelance photographer for such Dutch publications as De Volkskrant, Vrij Nederland and De Groene Amsterdammer, later specializing in engaged reportage and portrait photography.
Van den Broek has published a number of books and his work has featured in exhibitions across the country. He was awarded a Photojournalist of the Year, as well as an EU Journalist Award in 2006. Between 2000 and 2010 has received 24 category prizes in the Zilveren Camera contest.
