How Hwee Young is a Singaporean photojournalist who began her career in 2001 with Singapore’s The Straits Times, before joining the European Pressphoto Agency (EPA) in 2004 to cover Singapore and Southeast Asia. In 2010, she relocated to Beijing to join the China bureau of EPA, covering mainland China. She is currently chief photographer for the China region.
Her diverse coverage includes the Lushan earthquake in China, the Asian tsunami, Thailand’s red shirt protests, the global financial crisis, the Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia, the Beijing Summer Olympics, the Guangzhou Asian Games, Formula One grand prix, the Australian Tennis Open, the Shanghai FINA World Swimming Championship, and more. Her images have been widely published in major newspapers and magazines, including Time, The New York Times, The Guardian, The Times, International Herald Tribune, Los Angeles Times, The Sydney Herald, The Daily Telegraph, Süddeutsche Zeitung, The Independent, Le Monde, El Pais, Der Spiegel, Stern, and GEO, among others. Her accolades include a POYi Award of Excellence in 2014, in the Science and Natural History category, and an Award of Excellence from the Communication Arts annual photography exhibition in 2005, for her work on the tsunami in Thailand. Her pictures were exhibited at the La Quatrieme Image exhibition in Paris in 2013.
