Jo-Anne McArthur

Jo-Anne McArthur is an award-winning photojournalist, speaker, and the founder of We Animals Media. 

Jo-Anne McArthur has been documenting animal stories in over sixty countries for almost two decades. She is the author of the books HIDDEN: Animals in the Anthropocene (2020, co-edited with Keith Wilson), Captive (2017) and We Animals (2014). Her work has been awarded in Man and Nature category of the Nature Photographer of the Year competition in 2020, the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition in 2019 and 2017, the Festival della Fotografia Etica in 2019, the Humane Canada's Animal Welfare Leadership and Innovation Award for Public Engagement in 2018, and The Global Peace Photo Award in 2017. 

McArthur's work has been published in The Guardian, The Washington Post, National Geographic, Smithsonian Magazine, Feature Shoot, LensCulture, DAYS Japan and many others. In addition, her images have been used by hundreds of organizations, publishers and academics on the subject of our complex relationship with animals.

Jo-Anne McArthur is the subject of Canadian filmmaker Liz Marshall’s acclaimed documentary The Ghosts in Our Machine. Thousands of her images about our complex relationships with animals are available via the We Animals Archive. She hails from Toronto, Canada.
