Jodi Bieber is a photographer from South Africa whose work explores contemporary issues related to gender, politics and identity, often contradicting the mainstream media narrative.
Bieber’s professional career began covering the 1994 Democratic Elections in South Africa for The Star newspaper after following courses at The Market Photography Workshop in Johannesburg.
Her photographic projects are exhibited both locally and internationally in museums, galleries, festivals, institutions and are housed in some significant collections including The Artur Walther Collection, The François Pinault Collection, The Oppenheimer Collection, The Johannesburg Art Gallery, Iziko Museums Collection, and Jean Paul Blachere Foundation. Her work was included in the exhibition ‘The Female Gaze, A Collective of Women Street Photographers’ at the Howard Greenberg Gallery, New York in 2022 alongside photographers such as Diane Arbus, Helen Levitt and Vivian Maier.
Her five monographs: Between Dogs and Wolves – Growing up with South Africa, 1996; Soweto, 2010; Real Beauty, 2014; Between Darkness and Light, Selected Works: South Africa, 1994 - 2010; and Francois. Lockdown in times of the Corona Virus, 2020, are exhibited in solo and group shows locally and abroad.
She has won numerous international awards including World Press Photo of the Year in 2011. The winning photograph of Bibi Aisha from Afghanistan first appeared on the cover of TIME Magazine in 2010. In 2019, The New York Times and CNN included this photograph in the top 100 photographs that influenced the previous decade.
Bieber mentors and guides students and photographers, lectures and has taught photographic workshops all over the world.
The Royal Photographic Society named her as one of The Hundred Heroines in 2018.
