We wish to express concern for the safety, and ability to communicate internationally, of staff at our regional partner Drik Picture Library, in Bangladesh. The violent government response against journalists, resulting in the death of one and injury of several, and protesters is alarming - as is the shutting down of internet access.
Drik Picture Library is an independent media organization committed to challenging social inequality. Established in 1989, it specializes in art, media and communication for local and global audiences. It does so by creating a nurturing environment where storytellers, artists, activists and scholars have been able to speak truth to power and challenge oppression in all forms, while maintaining the highest levels of professionalism.
Selected photographs and reports on the protests in Bangladesh can also be seen on Drik’s Facebook page.
World Press Photo and Drik have had a formal partnership since July 2022. We are grateful for the knowledge, perspectives, connections, and energy they have brought to that partnership. We hope their staff can remain safe while they continue their work.
