Statement on investigations concerning the 1973 World Press Photo of the Year

New questions around the making of an iconic Vietnam war photo

We are aware of investigations into the attribution of the 1973 World Press Photo of the Year (taken on 08 June 1972), and are in contact with the relevant parties. Our priority is to understand the facts of the situation, as best as possible, before taking any action.

We also recognize how difficult this situation is for all involved.

Joumana El Zein Khoury, executive director, said:

“It is important to remember that some facts remain beyond dispute - such as the importance of this iconic photograph, as well as the courage and professionalism of photojournalists documenting horrors of war throughout the decades.

We take our responsibility to recognize the correct photographer for every award extremely seriously. Accuracy and fairness is at the core of our work. We will examine the evidence in this case closely, and as fairly as possible.”
