We’re proud to present the World Press Photo Yearbook 2021, showcasing the most striking images and compelling stories from 2020 with winning photography from the 64th annual Photo Contest, taken by 45 photographers from 28 countries.
In an unprecedented year marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and social justice protests around the globe, the 2021 Contests winners share a diversity of interpretations and perspectives to these and other urgent issues such as the climate crisis, LGBTQ+ people's rights, and territorial conflicts.
This year, the 240-page hardcover yearbook features The First Embrace, the World Press Photo of the Year by Mads Nissen, on the cover. It also includes essays by Saskia Asser, curator of Photography, Rijksmuseum; Azu Nwagbogu, founder and director of African Artists' Foundation (AAF) and Lagos Photo Festival; and NayanTara Gurung Kakshapati, 2021 Photo Contest jury chair and co-founder and director of photo.circle.
“This publication highlights [the photographers’] exemplary commitment to visual journalism and the importance of portraying the world in all its complexities. It is both testimony to and a poignant visual archive of this transformative year, for generations to come,” explains NayanTara Gurung Kakshapati.
The book is available worldwide in six languages: English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. See a preview of the book

Connecting the world to the stories that matter.
About the World Press Photo Foundation
We are a global platform connecting professionals and audiences through trustworthy visual journalism and storytelling, founded in 1955 when a group of Dutch photographers organized a contest (“World Press Photo”) to expose their work to an international audience. Since then, our mission has expanded. Our contests have grown into the world’s most prestigious competitions, rewarding the best in visual journalism and digital storytelling. Through our successful worldwide exhibition program, we present to millions of people the stories that matter. Our Develop programs - including the 6x6 Global Talent Program, the African Photojournalism Database, the Joop Swart Masterclass, the Solutions Visual Journalism Initiative, and the West Africa Visual Journalism Initiative - encourage stories highlighting different perspectives of the world.
The World Press Photo Foundation is a creative, independent, nonprofit organization, based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. We appreciate the support of our global partner, the Dutch Postcode Lottery, and our partners Aegon and PwC.
