Manuel Pérez Barriopedro (Madrid 1947) began studying photography in 1961, working as a photo lab assistant in a lab dedicated to press photography. In 1970, with a camera given to him by his father, Barriopedro started covering daily events in Madrid for Reuters. After the death of General Francisco Franco in 1975, his work was primarily dedicated to political issues during the transition to democracy. During his time at Agencia EFE, he was Photographer-in-chief, Editor-in-chief and Deputy Director of the Photography Department. His honors include World Press Photo of the Year 1981, the Spanish National Journalism Award (1982), Mingote Prize (1988), the Ortega y Gasset Prize (1993) and the Silver Medal of Merit for his more than forty years of work in the field of photojournalism. Barriopedro is currently retired, but continues to present lectures on photography and photojournalism.
