Lucian Perkins (1952, USA) graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a degree in biology. He started his photographic career as a photographer for the student newspaper The Daily Texan, after studying photography with Garry Winogrand. After an internship at The Washington Post in 1979, he was appointed staff photographer in 1980. In 1995, Lucian Perkins co-founded InterFoto, the first International Photojournalism Conference in Moscow, which was organized annually between 1995 and 2005.
For the Washington Post, Perkins photographed many international conflicts and crises, including the war in former Yugoslavia, the Palestinian uprising on the West Bank, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He has also covered events throughout the United States. Lucian Perkins also produced the first multimedia, interactive projects for the online version of The Washington Post.
Lucian Perkins won many prizes including the World Press Photo of the Year, two Pulitzer prizes and the Newspaper Photographer of the Year, awarded by the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA). Currently, Perkins is an independent photographer and filmmaker concentrating on multimedia projects and video documentaries.
