Loup Langton

Loup Langton’s career reflects a balance between international professional and creative work as well as journalism-related research and education. As a freelance photographer, represented by J.B. Pictures, and editor, he contributed to several books and was published in numerous international publications. In addition, his work has appeared in exhibitions in New York and Washington, D.C. 

As director of Photography for Copley Chicago Newspapers, he helped lead a team that twice produced the Pictures of the Year International (POYi) Newspaper Photographer of the Year and as director of visuals for Ecuador’s El Universo, he helped redefine the use of photographs in that country’s newspapers.

Together with Ecuadorian photographer, Pablo Corral Vega, Langton created and co-directed the POY Latam visual journalism contest that is the largest and most prestigious contest of its kind in Ibero America. 

Langton served on faculty at the University of Missouri School of Journalism and at the University of Miami School of Communication where he also served as the director of the Visual Journalism program. He later became Director of Western Kentucky’s School of Journalism and Broadcasting.

His book, Photojournalism and Today’s News, is used in college classrooms across the Americas and Europe. He participated in the 2016 Habitat III Conference in Quito, Ecuador and moved to Lisbon in 2017 while on sabbatical to create an interactive project that explores new definitions for urban journalism. Langton received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Texas School of Communication in 1994. He retired from university work at the end of 2020 and is now beginning research for another book.

Loup Langton has worked with the World Press Photo Foundation in various capacities since 2005 and served on the selection committee for the 6x6 Global Talent Program.
