Jonas Bendiksen (1977) began his career at the age of 19 as an intern at Magnum Photos’ London office, before leaving for Russia to pursue his own work as a photographer.
Throughout the several years he spent there, Bendiksen photographed themes from the fringes of the former Soviet Union–a project that was published as the book Satellites (2006). Across his body of work, Bendiksen often focuses on people and communities forming isolated enclaves, which he continued to explore in The Places We Live.
Bendiksen has received numerous awards, including the 2003 Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography, New York, as well as first prize at Pictures Of the Year International (POY).
His magazine clients include GEO, Newsweek, Vanity Fair, The Sunday Times Magazine and National Geographic Magazine.
In 2004, Bendiksen joined Magnum Photos and was the agency’s president from 2010 to 2011. After living in London, Moscow and New York for twelve years, he has been living in Nesodden, Norway since 2007.
