Joanne Rathe graduated from Boston University and then worked for a year for Springfield Newspapers in Massachusetts. After that she worked as a photographer for The Boston Herald for four years, until she joined The Boston Globe in 1985. At the Globe she occupied the positions of photographer, photo editor and assignment editor. Rathe is currently assistant chief photographer on the same newspaper.
