Viktor Popovichenko (32), takes a tumble after one too many shots of samegun, a homemade vodka that sells for US$ 1 a liter. Viktor drinks a bottle a day. Orane is a nearly deserted village just 30km from Chernobyl, scene of the nuclear disaster of 1986. With no work and few other activities to keep them busy, many residents resort to alcohol to pass the time. A recent World Mental Health survey in Ukraine found that 38.7 percent of men were heavy alcohol users.
