The body of a woman lies beneath rubble. One million people were left homeless when an earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale struck Gujarat on January 26. The earthquake came during the winter, leaving the homeless cold at night, and at risk of disease. Densely populated towns near the earthquake's epicenter were heavily damaged.
