Since aid from the former Soviet Union ceased to reach Cuba following the fall of communism, the country's economy has plummeted. With daily necessities such as food and medication becoming increasingly scarce, thousands fled to the US. Many of those who stayed behind have to look for basic supplies on the black market in the streets.
