Life in Tirana is marred by the need of almost everything, even daily bread. 1991 was an eventful year for Albania. Dictator Enver Hoha's statues came crashing down and the exodus of ethnic Greeks was followed by thousands trying to escape to Italy. Quite unexpectedly, the March general election returned the communists to power.
