Rescuers lift the body of an infant in the aftermath of a car bombing. Beirut, once known as the Paris of the Middle East, was rapidly being reduced to ruins by rockets and artillery shells. Peaceful villages in the Chouf had also been razed to the ground, with the fighting extending to Tripoli.
