10 Minutes. 12 Gunfire Bursts. 30 Videos. Mapping the Las Vegas Massacre

Production

The New York Times

Faced with shifting reports about the mass shooting in Las Vegas, The New York Times sought to establish a timeline independent of that offered by officials. We applied a relatively new technique - investigative video reporting, or so-called video forensics. We gathered and analyzed dozens of video and audio clips recorded inside the festival, at the Mandalay hotel, and on Las Vegas Boulevard. We revealed new details about the gunman’s actions, showed how concertgoers, the police, and medics responded, and provided an accurate bullet count.

This immersive reconstruction provides the most complete picture to date of the worst mass shooting in modern American history.
