New technologies have expanded the ways and means of doing journalism, meaning it is no longer synonymous with the printing press. The rise of digital technologies and the Internet has transformed the way we produce, publish, circulate and consume visual stories. Amidst this upheaval, our advocacy of free inquiry, free expression, free speech, and a free press is stronger than ever.

Photography is a lens-based practice which employs a sensor or film to produce a picture. The World Press Photo Foundation cherishes its heritage and supports the continued importance of photography. With the rise of new technologies, there are now numerous imaging practices. We serve the community of visual journalism and storytelling, incorporating those who work with photojournalism, documentary photography, infographics, interactives, multimedia, video journalism—and things that have not yet been invented—to give us high-quality visual stories.
