World Press Photo House to open in Westerpark Amsterdam

The World Press Photo Foundation will open the World Press Photo House on the Westergasfabriek site in Amsterdam this spring.

The World Press Photo Foundation has received a substantial contribution from the Dutch Postcode Lottery for a multi-year program of cultural and educational initiatives linked to the World Press Photo House.

As a Dutch organization the World Press Photo Foundation has a long-standing ambition to create a public location for its diverse portfolio of activities and programs. The World Press Photo House will enable the Foundation to create new and innovative cultural and educational activities to promote visual journalism and storytelling in Amsterdam, an expansion of its mission of connecting the world to the stories that matter.

The World Press Photo House will be located in Westergasfabriek’s former engineers’ building, making the World Press Photo Foundation one of the new tenants at Westergasfabriek. The new location will also be the office of the team of World Press Photo.

The World Press Photo Foundation has received 1.190.000 euro from the Dutch Postcode Lottery for activation of a multi-year program of cultural and educational initiatives linked to the World Press Photo House. In the lead up to the Dutch Postcode Lottery’s annual Charity Gala on 4 March, the lottery presented World Press Photo with the news of this new funding. The donation to World Press Photo is made possible thanks to the participants of the Dutch Postcode Lottery.

Lars Boering, managing director of the World Press Photo Foundation, said:

"We live in a time where visual literacy is more important than ever and the essential conditions of the freedom of expression, freedom of speech and freedom of the press can not be taken for granted. Opening a public place to engage our audience with year-round cultural and educational activities is a long-cherished ambition of ours. With the great support of the Dutch Postcode Lottery, and our partnership with Westergasfabriek, we are going to be able to provide this, and expand our role as a global platform that connects professionals and audiences through high-quality reporting and storytelling that can be trusted. The World Press Photo Foundation is grateful for the continued support of the Dutch Postcode Lottery and looks forward to deepening the partnership.”

Duncan and Lisca Stutterheim, Millten, and Meijer family, owners, Westergasfabriek:
