Walter Studer

Switzerland
Walter Studer (1918 – 1986) started his career as a press photographer in 1941 at Agentur Photopress in Zürich. After seven years with Photopress, Studer established himself as a freelance photographer in Bern. In the 1950s, he made photo reportages about daily life in different European countries for magazines such as Schweizer Illustrirte and Sie + Er. Later, he also worked for advertisers and other commercial clients. In the 1960s for example, Studer made photos for the posters, brochures and calendars published by the Schweizer Bundesbahn SBB/CFF. From 1974 to 1986, he made many photo series in black-and-white for the magazine ‘Schweiz, Suisse, Svizzera’, together with his son Peter Studer, also a photographer. Walter Studer retired in 1981 and moved from Bern to Emmental, where he died in 1986.
