A new way to announce the results of the 2018 World Press Photo contests

This year the World Press Photo Foundation will announce the results of the 2018 World Press Photo Contest and 2018 Digital Storytelling Contest in a new way.

We are introducing a system of first revealing award nominees, and then announcing the winners live at the Awards Show.

The first step is on 14 February: we will reveal the award nominees in each of the eight photo contest categories and the four digital storytelling contest categories at a press conference in Amsterdam. This year each category will have three nominees.

For the first time ever, there will also be a public shortlist for the World Press Photo of the Year, with six nominees for the major prize revealed at the press conference. The photo of the year nominees are chosen from amongst the nominated singles and the nominated stories in each category.

The second step is on 12 April: chosen from the six nominees, the winner of the World Press Photo of the Year will be announced for the first time at the Awards Show, an exclusive celebration in Amsterdam. In both the photo contest and the digital storytelling contest, the first, second, and third prizes will be announced to the three nominees at the Awards Show.

This new process for announcing the results of the contests is part of the World Press Photo Foundation’s new plans to increase the visibility of the dedicated visual journalists and storytellers who give us the stories that matter. The foundation has received a lot of interest in the possibility of broadcasting an awards show that appropriately honors visual journalists and their stories. As broadcasting an awards show requires the live announcement of winners from a previously disclosed list of nominees, the foundation is introducing the nominee system and live winners’ announcement this year, before developing possible broadcast plans in the next couple of years.

If you are a journalist and would like to know how we can help you cover the announcement and/or attend the press conference in February and the Awards Show in April, please contact us at communications@worldpressphoto.org
