Selection Committee
Nominations for visual storytellers from Southeast Asia and Oceania were made by the international community of over 100 6x6 nominators. From the nominees’ submitted portfolios, a selection committee picks six visual storytellers to join the pool of 6x6 talents from around the world.
With Lars Boering, managing director of the World Press Photo Foundation, as chair, the online selection committee comprised Angelo Gian De Mesa (Philippines), photographer, writer and researcher; Maika Elan (Vietnam), photographer; Tim J. Veling (New Zealand), photographer and educator; and Emmeline Yong (Singapore), co-founder and director of Objectifs. Find out more about the nomination and selection processes.
Nominator Quotes
On nominating Sinead Kennedy, Raphaela Rosella (Australia), visual-storyteller, said:
“Concerned with the politics of migration and asylum in an Australian context, Sinead Kennedy is on the verge of making some of Australia's most interesting and challenging work as she pushes boundaries within the practice of expanded documentary.”
On nominating Eloisa Lopez, Helena Velez Olabarria (Spain), visual researcher, curator and project manager, said:
“Eloisa Lopez's outstanding photojournalistic work reminds us of the importance of professional visual journalists documenting issues to be read by audiences. Her projects projects are characterized by an empathic and sensitive look at the individuals and communities she portrays.”
On nominating Ruth McDowall, Andrew Esiebo (Nigeria), photographer, said:
“For 11 years now, Ruth Mcdowall has been based in West Africa dedicating her photography practices to putting light on the plights of people living on the 'margin' and leading projects that serve as agencies for people at risk of violence.”
On nominating Ko Myo, Matt Grace (UK), founder and director of Myanmar Deitta, said:
“Ko Myo uses his critical eye and technical precision - developed through years of studying a single theme and developing a nuanced collection of imagery - to explore various issues related to the crossroad between tradition and modernity at which Myanmar now finds itself.”
On nominating Linh Pham, Laurence Tan (Singapore), assignment editor at Getty Images, said:
“Linh Pham represents a new generation of photographers who constantly question the boundaries in visual storytelling. Starting his career as a graphic designer in Ho Chi Minh City, before pursuing photography in Hanoi, Linh Pham’s stories reflect his personal exploration of social trends and contemporary issues with a unique vision.”
On nominating Albertus Vembrianto, Cristian Rahadiansyah (Indonesia), editor-in-chief of DestinAsian Indonesia, said:
“Albertus Vembrianto is one of few photographers that dedicates his life to give voice to the Papuan people.”
Prizes
In addition to exhibition opportunities, the work of the six talents will also be published and shared on the World Press Photo Foundation’s platforms, including a feature on our online magazine Witness for each of the talents. 6x6 talents also receive an automatic nomination for World Press Photo’s prestigious Joop Swart Masterclass.
