Edward Echwalu is a freelance photojournalist based in Kampala, Uganda.
With 16 years of experience, he has primarily focused on covering Uganda, while also taking on assignments in more than a dozen other African countries. His work has centered on conflict and its effect on countries in the Great Lakes region. He has extensively covered the influx of refugees from South Sudan, DR Congo, Eritrea and Ethiopia.
Edward mentors photographers across Africa through VII Agency (Foundry) and the Uganda Press Photo Awards. He is also a contributor to Everyday Africa, part of the Everyday Projects, and is a member of both the International Press Association of Uganda and the Uganda Sports Press Association.
He was highly commended at the CNN African Journalist of the Year Awards for his Ugandan coverage of opposition protests in 2012 and Nodding Syndrome among children in 2013. In 2009, Edward received the Cranimer Mugerwa Photojournalism Prize.
Edward’s work has been published in international media publications such as Reuters, New York Times, The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, NPR, Al Jazeera, The Observer (Uganda), DW, among others.
