Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez greets supporters at a massive rally, just before his re-election in December. Chávez won by a landslide, saying that the socialist revolution in Venezuela, which has the largest oil reserves in the Americas, had begun in earnest. He achieved wide popular support by announcing a new luxury tax, and put forward plans to substitute the US with China as Venezuela's leading trade partner.
