Indian artillery guns are engulfed in one of four battle zones in the disputed territory of Kashmir. Fighting had been raging since May, bringing India and Pakistan to the brink of war. On July 10 an operation by the Indian army cleared most infiltrating troops from Dras, and by July 16 fighting in Kashmir had died down. The conflict over Kashmir dates back more than 50 years, and has been behind two of the three wars between India and Pakistan.
