This seminar will examine the essential skills to write funding and grant proposals, from focusing on results frameworks to writing techniques and budgeting strategies. Each section will provide practical insights to help enhance proposal quality, clarity, alignment with grants’ objectives, and a strong financial plan.

The Seminar will be divided into the following sections

Section 1: Results Frameworks

A comprehensive overview of the results framework guides you through structuring project plans that include activities, outputs, outcomes, and impact. You will learn to use this approach across various application forms, even when not explicitly required. Real-world examples will clarify the different levels of the framework, and you will receive tips on addressing assumptions and adapting the framework strategically for specific proposals.

Section 2: Writing

You will explore how to approach application forms as clear, cohesive texts focusing on direct, concise answers to application questions. This section demonstrates how the results framework can highlight key project points and improve proposal coherence. Examples of poor vs. strong writing will be shared to illustrate best practices. The session will also cover the importance of tailoring language to suit different funding bodies, maximizing proposal relevance and impact.

Section 3: Budgeting

You will learn the fundamentals of budgeting, focusing on how budgets support and reinforce project narratives while showcasing organizational competence. You will explore key budgeting principles, including fair pay, appropriate detail, and grouping costs effectively. This section will discuss budgeting as a communication tool, offering strategies for managing deviations and ensuring flexibility.

The session will be led by Laura Alexander, Coordinator Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning at Prince Claus Fund

Laura Alexander is the coordinator of Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning at the Prince Claus Fund, where she conducts in-depth qualitative research on the impact of the organisations’ support to artists and cultural practitioners across Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe.
