He became an editor after a decade as a photojournalist focusing on the Middle East, and based in the Gaza Strip, Jerusalem, and Iraq. Since joining the Times he has coordinated the organization’s enhanced international emphasis on photography, and overseen coverage around the world that has won numerous awards, including The Pulitzer Prize, The George Polk Award, The World Press Photo of the Year, Pictures of the Year International, and the Visa d’Or.
